Abstract

This document explores the differences between neo-craft, rural crafts and folk art, highlighting the complexity of urban craftsmanship in comparison with neo-craft. Urban expansion, together with migratory flows from rural areas to cities and tourism, has compelled artisans to reconfigure their practices. Urban spaces have become unavoidable showcases for folk art, presenting both opportunities and challenges for artisans. The text also analyses how design can serve as a valuable method for planning, conceptualising, and evaluating craft production in this new context. Finally, the study examines current dynamics in several workshops in Mexico, emphasising the inevitable synergy between the artisan, the academic arts, and design – and how these interactions are also reflected in other countries across the region.
