Comparative critique of design and architecture at the Ulm School of Design: An analysis of articles by its teachers in form (1962–1967)

Abstract

Between 1962 and 1967, the German magazine form published, following the English Design, a series of reports on objects of industrial production by teachers and graduates of the Hochschule of Gestaltung of Ulm [School of Ulm]. The first of these articles revealed the experiment of a new critique of design bringing together different points of view and techniques of analysis, which was developed in twenty-two issues in coherence with the reasoned and systematic approach being carried out at the school. Bringing them together, analysing their structure, contents and illustrations, and contrasting them with an extensive bibliography, we discover in these unknown ulmian products the contribution of the Hochschule für Gestaltung to the contemporary debate on the critique and history of modern material culture, an attempt at a methodology for talking about industrial design and architecture and pushing forward its immediate future.

Teresa Escaño Rodríguez , Departamento de Arquitectura, Universidad de Alcalá (Madrid, España)

Architect (ETSAM), PhD from UPM in the Architectural Heritage Programme, she is a researcher and assistant professor of Architectural Construction in the Department of Architecture at the University of Alcalá. While pursuing a consistent integration of formal and material processes in her independent practice as an architect, she has for years been conducting her research into morphology, component-based architecture, and movements, currents and manifestations rooted in constructive logic, particularly the interpretation of their processes and methodologies.
